WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: late

Weather conditions:

The spring was cold and prolonged, and a lot of snow remained in tundra till the end of June. From the second week of July warm weather without temperature drops, fogs and intensive raines established and retained during summer.

Season humidity:
Date of 50% snow-cover:
Date of ice-break on rivers:
Date of final loss of snow:

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Arctic Foxes were not abundant, but raised small or average broods successfully. Snowy Owls nested at a density 4-5 times lower than in 1994, but locally were very abundant. The number of fledging in owls was low. Pomarine Skuas, common at the season's beginning, later become scarce and didn't nest, Long-tailed Skuas rarely nested. Density of nesting Grey Plovers, Knots and Turnstones was 2-3 time higher than usial in the southern part of the island that became snow-free earlier; in other parts bird numbers were low. Wader reproductive success can be evaluated as not exceeding average.

Rodent dynamics:

Numbers of both lemming species decreased, although locally was not low.

Rodent species recorded:
